Janelle Nivens is endeavoring to tour all 81 neighborhoods of Minneapolis and is looking for tour guides. I was lucky enough to be the guide with my wife Kelly for Minnehaha neighborhood. Our cat Mabel even made a cameo. I found quite a few historical resources in Special Collections to prepare for the tour. Minnehaha neighborhood once was the gateway to Minnehaha Park and used to be quite the rowdy place - roller rinks and dance halls and close dancing! It was a street car suburb that grew into the post World War II era. Now it has a great mix of new and long term residents and still has a small town feel with a mini commercial district on 34th Avenue between Minnehaha Parkway and Highway 62. The newly renovated Nokomis Library is also a great neighborhood amenity.
Recently a restaurant on the commercial strip (but technically in Wenonah neighborhood), Las Teresitas was just chosen as the place with the best taco according to City Pages. Tuesdays are dollar taco day, by the way.
