Barkhad Abdi and his friends Faysal Ahmed, Barkhad Abdirahman and Mahat M. Ali, are bringing fame to the Minneapolis Somali community. The four first-time actors star alongside Tom Hanks in “Captain Phillips” a film based on the 2009 hijacking of an American-crewed Danish freighter, the Maersk Alabama, by Somali pirates. Abdi’s role as Muse, the leader of the Somali pirates, is already generating Oscar buzz for potential best supporting actor. The film opened October 11.

Abdi is a graduate of Roosevelt High School and is pictured here as a Junior in the 2002 Roosevelt Sagamore yearbook.
