Life on the Mississippi, 1883 (London, England edition)
Another book from our Hoag Mark Twain Collection. We just had a patron question about mid-1880s steamboat travel on the Mississippi between New Orleans and St. Paul. This has some interesting information about the state of steamboat travel in the 1880s and the increased competition with railroads.
The book covers the early history of the river and has some stories from Twain’s youth. The latter half of the book details a trip on the river later in his life where he sees a steamboat named after him and pictured above.
